Noob Help Please...

I just found this on gamepass, but it's so frustrating. Half the tricks don't seem to work like the on screen prompts suggest they should so half the time I don't land the trick the mission requires yet do the same thing in free roam and pull if the exact trick I just failed a dozen times.
Is this down to jank in missions, something I'm doing wrong or something else?
I want to like this game, but this is putting me off playing any further...
