It's odd that gift cards are priced at their face value. A $100 gift card, for example, limits a person to one place, whereas $100 cash has unlimited purchase potential.

If it's a choice between gift card vs cash, just go cash. There is no need to promote gift cards so companies can earn more while the money goes unused and people who still want to buy regular gifts can do so. Just leave the fucked gift cards on the store shelf where they belong and let companies cry.
