George Lucas started on Episode IV deliberately because the prequels were shit.

So there's an idea going about the internet that George Lucas really didn't know what was going on in the whole saga, and that's why the prequels were terrible.

My theory is this- George Lucas did indeed know exactly what was going on in the whole saga, and started with A New Hope because he knew that the prequels were terrible, and if he started there he'd never get to make another film in the series.
