So here's my jokey-but-also-serious theory about a major plot point for this first season of Strange New Worlds.
Captain Pike has realised that he has Arthur Dent (from Hitchhiker's Guide) predestination immortality so is free to take as many reckless risks with his life as he wants. He knows he will live for another 10 years (or whatever), so he can take extremely risky decisions that would seem certain to destroy the whole ship because he knows that he must live through it. The burden is that this immortality doesn't extend to his crew, so he has to weigh their best interests against his immortality.
This is what allows him to do such things as the Pike Manuever, and why he will go down as one of the best captains in Star Trek history, because he somehow took all of these crazy risks but they paid off again and again, perhaps at the cost of a higher crew death count - again as we just saw in the last episode with the Gorn.
