Why can't captain be the first one off the ship?

You know how in trek it seems like they follow the old rule of captain being the last person off the ship in a disaster situation. Why can't the captain be the first one off the ship like in tng time squared?
Captain : computer emergency protocol captain pi epsilon.
Transporters beam captain to emergency escape pod which jettison.
