A quick tl;dr for the news article: Two Muslim teens, 16 & 17, were brutally beaten by an unknown assailant, who yelled “You fucking terrorists,” at them.
Well, you could offer sympathy for the victims of the terror attack. After all, it's not the first time that attackers have targeted Muslims and called them terrorists before proceeding to beat them up. Stereotypes such as this are basically indicative of hate crimes, and such incidents have precedent.
But no, we're on /r/news, which of course has to have the denial typical of reddit comments on hate crime.
They're actually familiar with the attacker. The imam told the police that he was a neighborhood fixture. The police also stated that when interviewed, the boys didn't claim anything biased was said. That block is known for drug dealing and prostitution. So, was it, or wasn't it a bias attack? I don't know. But it's not so cut and dried as this article makes it seem. [ 86]
Okay, so I admit that details on this crime are unclear at the moment. BUT HOLY FUCKING HELL DO YOU HAVE TO BE A DOUBTING THOMAS RIGHT NOW? Two people have had the shit beaten out of them, in front of a place of worship, all you care about is finding excuses as to why it couldn't have been a hate crime.
Okay, now, the commenter above also included a link to substantiate their claims:
You're probably right, but this seems kind of fishy. Why would the cops repeatedly deny knowing anything about the attacks, then come out right away staying they weren't biased?
Also where are you getting the info on the boys assaulted statements? Another article? That info isn't in this one.
The original buzzfeed article did state it hadn't been put into the main system yet when they called to inquire about it, but that it was later verified to have happened.
This article swiped and seriously edited the buzzfeed article which was more impartial.

Now, I'll be the doubting thomas and point out one very telling detail in the article; according to it, an NYPD spokesperson said:
“These two individuals were standing outside of the vehicle with a woman who I understand was dressed quite provocatively,” he said. “They were not in any Muslim attire.”
Notice the victim blaming taking place? This is the very same spokesperson who also later said that:
“The hate crimes unit did interview both victims, who said the suspect didn’t say anything anti-Muslim to them,” he added.
Trusting the words of someone who blames the victim of a brutal beating for "dressing provocatively?" That's something reddit would be pretty glad to do.
Some reasonable comments are upvoted too, but the thread is kinda young and there's a good chance that more upvoted poop will pop up later.
