Reminds me of this gem.
Exactly. I‘m an immigrant myself, we didn‘t flee. The deal was we‘d visit the other country and if my dad found a job within a month, we‘d stay. He found a job within a week.
That was in the 90ies. There is still a lack of workers in the industry my dad‘s in. ETA: Mine as well fwiw
Yet we get demonised, told we must be so grateful for the good life here compared to where we‘re from (my dad‘s been wanting to go back forever, I‘ve also considered it), people talk about us being thieves, rapists, uncultured, etc. But I get told I‘m not like the others, so I‘ve got that going for me.
ranty tangent: There‘s constant push to get immigrants out. The 1970 initiative ‚against foreign infiltration‘ to deport almost half of all foreigners (you don‘t get citizenship at birth here) was almost passed (46% - 54%) and there‘s shit like that constantly. Foreigners get depicted as literal black sheep to be kicked out on propaganda posters by the most popular party.
But yes. I get told I‘m not like the others. Mainly by liberals. Until I do something they don‘t like. Then it‘s I always knew you were one of them and shouldn‘t have trusted you.
I‘m tired.

Exactly. The smug delivery really is something.
Like yes, there‘s a point… somewhere. Same in the above ‚meme‘. It just doesn‘t land if the marginalised group is the punchline, reduced to their labour.
