"[Jefferson Davis] was a good leader considering the economic situation the South was in; it's why his statue sits proudly outside the Mississippi Statehouse to this day"

Jefferson Davis is pretty universally viewed by historians as a poor choice for president of the CSA. He was a micromanager, and thought that he had the best military mind in the Confederacy. His defense strategy was poor: he wanted to defend everywhere, rather than stripping peripheral fronts of troops, leading to Confederate weakness in the East and West. In the west this was particularly egregious, with Davis leaving large armies in Arkansas that made Confederate armies in Tennessee short of men, and forcing Confederate commanders to strip places like New Orleans of troops (with severe consequences). In the East, he forced Lee to leave a large body of troops defending Richmond, even when the Army of the Potomac was far away. Davis also micromanaged the appointment of generals, but did so badly. He would often promote personal friends, and feuded with many senior officers. Within his cabinet, politicians were promoted and demoted for their relationship with Davis and political reasons rather than their competence. He was abrasive and made enemies easily, creating a dysfunctional cabinet and breeding resentment in the states that led to military and administrative inefficiency.

"Lincoln was flexible; Davis was rigid. Lincoln wanted to win; Davis wanted to be right. Lincoln had a broad strategic vision of Union goals; Davis could never enlarge his narrow view. Lincoln searched for the right general, then let him fight the war; Davis continuously played favorites and interfered unduly with his generals, even with Robert E. Lee. Lincoln led his nation; Davis failed to rally the South"
