one question before starting ln

i watched the anime and not satisfied with departures' ending so i planned on reading the source material. as i was about to start reading volume 1, one thought comes to mind, "how would the 'plot' be presented here in light novel form?"
is it just gonna be an illustration with not too much description or like full on adult 18 fanfic with detailed descriptions?
regardless of the answer, i'm still going to read it, just... yeah want to get it off my head.
