Here's a what-if: mistaken identity?
Post Body

I'm trying to think of plausible ways in which Sherri could be telling the truth and not hoaxing, and so what if it were a mistaken identity situation?

What if the two Latinas were on a more conventional criminal mission? Such as:

  1. Hired hit job?

  2. Wanted to grab and scare a romantic rival?

  3. Drug lord, bookie, or psycho ex-husband paid them to bring someone in debt/ex-wife/girlfriend to them?

Unfortunately, they grabbed the wrong petite blonde. They realized their mistake quickly, but kept her for a few more weeks while they dithered over what to do. Why not just kill her? Well, maybe they really weren't cold-blooded murderers and couldn't bring themselves to do it. Or maybe they were experienced enough at being a criminal to realize that this highly-publicized case would bring too much attention to them, and they decided to cut their losses at a possible kidnapping charge rather than risk being tied to a corpse.

Another possibility:

4) Sherri's kidnapping story has so much in common with the standard fake kidnapping experience that Cameron Gamble offers for sale that we are all theorizing this thing was a hoax made up by both of them. But if it were as simple as one of Sherri's neighbors paid to be fake-kidnapped but the Latinas grabbed the wrong woman (Sherri)? After discovering their mistake and dithering about what to do, Gamble decided to try to use this case for a little publicity before releasing Sherri, confused and traumatized but relatively unharmed.

That last hypothetical is straight-up sociopathic, but it's plausible that someone could rationalize that the good done (well-needed publicity for the struggling business plus "awareness" of abduction) would outweigh the evil done (abducting and imprisoning someone). I've certainly seen people rationalize away evil deeds in that fashion, and the rationalizers are very often religious, and conservative in their faith.

ETA: of course, for #4, there would have to be a decent number of conspirators, at least four, probably more than ten. I am extremely doubtful that many people could all keep their mouths shut and their stories straight, especially since until this happened, they wouldn't be involved in a criminal conspiracy.
