Suggestions for getting into Shantae?

So for some reason, I (loosely) consider myself a Shantae fan, despite having never played one of the games. I also really want her to be in Ultimate. Anyway, bring that Shantae 5 has been announced, I would like to get into the games, but don’t really know where to start (despite there being like, what, 4 games?)

I have a 3DS and a Switch, so my plan (when my budget allows, and I complete other games I’m currently playing) was to start from the beginning with the original, then go from there. Are they all worth playing? Any I should skip? Suggestions?
