Questions about volunteering

I’m considering applying to volunteer. My understanding is that when you volunteer your GA ticket is free and you get early access to the festival. But tickets go on sale in September and they aren’t taking applications “until the new year”. Should I buy my ticket in September and wait for the volunteer process to play out. And if I become a volunteer I then just sell my ticket?
