My GM and I are having a lively discussion about the intent and application of the Elf Poser quality in 5e. I created a background for my character, a human, then gave him the Elf Poser quality as part of that, but my GM disagrees that Elf Poser would mesh with the background I've created.
My character's parents were killed when he was very young. I was found, crying in an alley, by an older elf who was a lieutenant in the Ancients, an all Elven gang. He took me in and raised me as his own, despite being human. Physically, I appear close enough to an elf that someone not really paying attention would think I'm an elf, and I wear hats or head warps to cover my rounded ears, so I was able to pass as an elf for a little while. In time, through my own magical skills being useful to the gang and my adopted fathers insistence, I became a full member of the Ancients and worked my way up in ranks. I forgot all memories of my original parents, my human life, and became an advocate for the Ancients and what they stood and fought for.
I took Elf Poser because I thought it would explain why an all elf group would take in a human. My GM says the spirit of the quality is that humans see you as a race-traitor (which I'm fine with) and elves see you as a creepy wanna-be. Neither side really accepts you, and you're stuck in between two races that don't want you. I can't be a member of the Ancients if they don't think I'm one of them. I said the spirit of the quality is that you are a human who wants to be part of elven society, in my case, the Ancients, specifically, and forgo any ties to the human world. He said it's more like being an elf trapped in a human's body. Elves treat you like that racist uncle you have to associate with every Christmas, but don't really understand or wish to be around.
It's two different interpretations of the rule, and I was wondering how other people interpreted the quality. We ended up finding a middle ground to make the character work, but it got me curious. Thoughts?
