Newbie client: why do many SW ask for verification?

This may come off as naive and ignorant so I ask humbly so I can better inform myself.
I see on Private Delights that many woman ask for references or ID. I assume that the woman are not going to provide me their real name so why would they need mine? I can understand a safety concern but showing someone a fake ID with a fake name could be done by a John as well.
