I am big fan of sex work generally, but I find that the menu of options, the compensation structure, the law enforceement regime, and the scammers basically ruin the industry. In many ways it is like trying to find a reputable drug dealer.
If it were completely legal, I feel like many problems could be dealt with very quickly, and overall the quality of life for both sex workers and their customer base would improve. Here are some good for examples:
1. Health insurance. Man it would be nice to be professional part of legitimate business that offers health insurance to its workers, especially when some of the work they do is particularly likely to incur a healthcare treatment cost.
2. Paid time off / short term disability. If you got a UTI for example (not uncommon) this would be much like a professional athlete developing an bone or muscle injury. Right now, if you were to offer for example AtV services, you would taking the risk not just of the UTI (gross, painful, semi-debilitating) but also the impact that has on your ability to work. It would be much better for everyone if you could just take a week off work.
3. Business fraud protections. No more of this bullshit where people have published prices and then change them up as soon as you meet. No more fake people with fake profiles. No more bait and switch. All of those things are illegal in legitimate businesses, but because this is mostly black market, customers have no legal recourse.
4. Price competition and market segmentation. Basically, paying for sex would a lot more like paying for wine. A large number of potential providers in every market, at price points that meet every need. People who want an "arm candy" type of service like you might get on Ashley Madison would have their clear market just like a fine wine. And people who just want a variety of sex with a variety of people would have their market (table wines).
If feel like I could go on at length here about all of the potential upsides to legalization. What do you think as service providers? Would you be excited or upset if it were to be completely legalized?
