We-vibe Moxie+ controller issues?

Sometimes we like to play with our We-Vibe Moxie when it’s not possible to have our phones out, so we use the little controller that comes with the toy.
It seems to be hit or miss. We’ve run into an issue where the toy seems to pair to the controller, but then doesn’t turn on or respond to signals.
Has anyone else run into this? Pairing the toy in general?
When it works, it’s great fun. It can get stressful when the pairing is hinky, though.
