Thrusting rod not screwing onto mechanism

Just got today. Initial setup. I loosened knob as per instructions and I can see the screw in there but rod will not screw on at all. Not even a couple of threads. I looked in there with flashlight and I don’t see anything that would prevent assembly. Any secret or did I get a defective one
