Post Body

Right now I'm studying for the French fluency exam (the DELF.) There are six levels and I'm only working toward the 2nd (the 4th level is the most useful one that everyone takes.)

So can I just say that the "tutoring" session that took place in E3 at about 6:50 is just ridiculous? I mean, I know they have to condense and whatever, but no American has issues pronouncing the French "v." We don't accidentally pronounce that as "f."

We do, however, have issues pronouncing "r," "p," and multiple vowel sounds — any of which they could've used in that scene. In fact, the "eu" sound would've made for a way sexier scene.

But back up! Wtf is her problem in French anyway?

In E2 about 8:38, she clearly understands her prof and fellow students. She doesn't speak quite as quickly and she doesn't know the exact term for "dog grooming" but she manages to describe what she did last summer, and her accent isn't that far off the accent of the other students. It's like her prof decides that because she didn't spend the summer doing something interesting, she's disqualified.

Also, there would be a placement test for a class that is held entirely in French.

Even the course itself is ridiculous. The French Revolution and Romanticism? First, that's a lot to cram into a single semester. Second, one is history and the other is more like art history. Last, why in the world would they teach that class to freshman in French? French poetry, French literature, French theatre... any of those, I could understand. Or maybe even some 3rd/4th year classes for French studies majors. But the idea of this class existing for 5 freshman is patently absurd.

Anyway, the tutoring scene would've been funnier and sexier if they had, for example, shown him explaining some weird French grammar (there are plenty of funny examples) and her being both confused and distracted by how sexy he is.
