I've started altering some of my old clothes and am wondering if it's worth investing in a sewing machine or to keep doing it by hand? The alterations are mostly taking in the sides of button down shirts for a more fitting look or hemming shirts/pants. I mainly use a backstitch and try to keep the stitches close, my clothes seem to hold up after a few washings so far. I don't think I'll try to do anything more complicated than what I am doing now but was wondering if having a sewing machine would make things look cleaner, last longer, or have other advantages over doing it by hand.
