The waves brushed the soles of the Depthcaller’s feet as he lay on the beach unmoving. His eyes stared dead-forward into the sky, and muscles throughout his body tensed slightly the anticipation of long-awaited movement. The salt crystals that had formed between his back and the sand came apart, and the stone crashed directly into the gull soaring above with a disrupting thrack. Standing now, he went to where it lay on the ground, beside the fist size basalt stone that he had used to bring it down.
The sloping crannies that formed the entrance to his cave quickly gave way to the unearthly flat and straight stone surfaces that spiralled in geometric proportion to form the stone home of the Depthcaller. Sea water lapped in out at regular intervals, averaging to a half-inch pool of water consistently on the floor of the cave. It was time for the Depthcaller to rest, and open himself to the dream visions his god chose to send him, momentary glimpses of ancient lands and dark stone beasts flailing through leagues of deep and empty oceans.
His eyes opened the instant the sun rose, the rays of its shallowest angle travelled through the entrance of the cave unimpeded and directly onto his raised slab of stone. He rolled two times over off the slap and onto the cold cave floor. And then he rose, exited the cave, and began walking into the sea.
He was about waist-deep, as he usually was, when a wave large enough to knock him over came along. He felt the icy salt water wash over him, purging the last of his morning weariness as he fell beneath the surface. His skin-and-bone body sank onto the soft sand, and he let his mind blank as he exhausted his last breath of air. The panic was easy to hold back at this point, and he was at peace as the waves finally deposited him back on the shore. He gasped when his head was propped up enough to finally get another breath of air, and after a few minutes of lying there to regain consciousness, he stood back up. Once more the drowned one commanded him to stay at his post, and not yet travel to his great halls of vaulting black stone that ever waited beneath the waves.
