The fresh snow dampened the sounds of the forest to a whisper as Magnak crept along the deer path. It was a warmer day than most had been that winter, but still it was snowing. Large flakes tumbled down in a constant icy deluge. The silence was almost eerie compared to the hubbub of the camp, where Harn was rallying a force of a thousand men.Â
In the distance, a dirt-brown hind plodded its way through the trees, checking its left and right side constantly for predators, unaware of the large fur-wrapped man who had been trailing straight behind it for about an hour. Steadily he was closing the distance between the two, if he moved to fast he would set it fleeing, and there was no chance of him succeeding in a proper chase. He was about twenty years too old and thirty pounds too heavy. And so Magnak Crowson moved slowly and silently through the foot-deep snow. Careful of ice patches or branches that could crack and give him away. His spear was clenched tight in his right hand, doubling as a walking stick but ready to throw or stab at an instant. He passed an uncarved Weirwood, its stark white trunk almost blending in with the snow around it, aside from some light red stains where sap had flowed in the spring.Â
Suddenly he spotted something ahead, about ten feet to the right of the hind. He could make out dark fur, and a short stature. A bear probably, or possibly a shadowcat. He thought about the scar running down the side of his face, and slowed down. The deer still hadn't noticed it. The beast was shaking slightly, perhaps a shadowcat getting ready to pounce. Then it began to turn towards him, ignoring the deer beside it.Â
Leok Longspear turned around, pulling up his trousers. "Oh, hullo Magnak!", He shouted, "Nothing like yellowing some fresh snow eh?"
The hind bolted off into the woods with the sound, and he saw Magnak staring straight at it. Eyes slowly narrowing in annoyance and disbelief. His eyebrows diving down his face to fill the missing space, as the great hunter let out a deep sigh and laid face down into the snow.Â
