Scheduling Frustration
Post Body

I work part-time as a server and full-time as a teacher (about 60 hours per week). I’m a single mom, so I need both jobs to make ends meet. I’ve been in the restaurant industry for over 15 years (10 as a server), so I’m used to working holidays, weekends, etc. I typically work Thursday, Friday, Saturday nights, but I’m open to picking up shifts when needed as long as I have advanced notice to find childcare.

About a month ago our manager announced that Mothers Day would be a black out day and they needed all hands on deck, so no one could request off. I’m the only FOH staff member who is a mother, so they specifically singled me out at the staff meeting and said that even I would be expected to work. I assumed this would be the case, and I understood. I didn’t attempt to request off that day.

However, flash forward to the schedule being published for Mothers Day. Every single FATHER who works FOH was given the day off!! I guess they had prior obligations? But still, super annoying. The other two servers who work 3 days a week were given single shifts. I’m the only server who works more than one day a week who was assigned a double shift that day. I’ll be working with basically our “back up” server crew.

Honestly I’m pissed. It just seems super disrespectful. I know I’ll make good money that day, but it would’ve been nice to have a day off and spend time with my son, or at least to have been given the option of a single shift.
