how do I attack when I do my grapple

I have been stuck on the horse boss for a while so I looked up some guides. In the guide it tells me to grapple the boss then attack him when my character gets close. When I grapple him I sling towards him then nothing happens he just falls back to the ground and the boss continues his assault. In these video guides it shows them attacking mid air. I got the mid air combat arts ability but am I still missing something
