Playing the game wrong??

So I've completed 2 playthrus starting my 3rd. Hardly use any Shinobi tools or combat arts. I've never even pulled out the mortal blade. Is it because I'm running charmless and just don't feel the added posture. I play demon bell I'm just not perfect enough to accept the chip DMG. Is this common for anyone else or do I just like to hoard spirit emblems.
