[4004, SNK361K1, SRPH89] Decision between 3 Seikos
Post Body

Hi everyone

I'm new to watch collecting am strongly considering getting a Seiko as my next watch. I've heard nothing but good things about the brand, and some of the designs I've seen look (for lack of a better term) extremely sexy, so much to the point where I am struggling to pick between them.

1) Seiko 4004 This watch first popped into my radar after realizing that one of my uncles has one. After doing a bit of searching I realized that its a vintage watch, with most listings I could find being from the 1970s. eBay has plenty of options, with prices all over the place. A decent condition one (few scratches and average wear) seems to run about $100, some near mint ones spike up to $200-$300. One that needs some work (new crystal) can go for about as low as $40. My plan was to get a watch that needs a new crystal and have a local watch shop put a new one (that would end up costing a bit less than a decent condition one).

The pros of this one are that it would be, by far, the most inexpensive of these 3 watches, and you'd be getting a really nice reliable Seiko. The main con would be that its a ~50 year old quartz watch and buying one seems like kind of a gamble.

2) Seiko Auto 5 (SNK36K1) First saw this one on a list of "affordable must have automatics". Caught my attention with its simple, clean, uncomplicated dial. It seems like a very affordable, no nonsense watch that goes with everything (which me and my mostly hoodie and sweatpants wardrobe appreciate).

The pros of this are it's simple, reliable, and inexpensive

The cons are that its... Well, simple, reliable, and inexpensive. It might be just a touch too understated. (Was also considering the Contura SUR361, which has the same con). I don't like "flashy", but I do like character

3) Seiko Essentials SRPH89 I saw a post of the Oris Kermit on r/watches, which made me look into green dial watches and eventually land on this one. The green on this dial is very nice, one of the nicest I've seen. A lot of the greens I saw in my research were not appealing to me, except this one.

The pros are all of the things mentioned for the last watch. Simple design, clean looking, affordable automatic movement. With an amazing color to boot (the blue on the srph87 is stunning as well). The main con is that the logo size/placement is just a tiny bit off for me, and green isn't an easy color to match so I wouldn't be able to wear it as much (Same con applies to the sur449, which I was looking at as well).

Please let me know what you all think of this! Thank you!
