Hey guys. I've been a lurker/occasional commenter for a while now. Long time Saturn fan, mostly using SSF and my chip modded white model 2 Japanese Saturn to get my fix. It has been my most favorite gaming console since I started playing.
I used to collect video games for a wide variety of consoles back in high school. But before I came to college, I decided to give that up, deeming it an unhealthy habit. I spent more time buying, maintaining, and looking up the games than I did actually playing them. It sort of started to be a waste of money.
When I got rid of my games, I did keep a few important ones. Some with sentimental value, extreme monetary value, etc. But I also kept the few Japanese Saturn games I had. There were only four, but the games, the cases, inserts, and just the console itself holds so much personality. So I held onto those. A few years after that, (or rather, last week) my girlfriend and I took a week long trip to Japan. It was an absolutely incredible experience, and we went to loads of places, one of them being Akihabara. There, I found out that Saturn games were waaaaay way cheaper than importing them in the U.S. I got Sakura Taisen for the equivalent of $0.50 USD, no joke. I also got a handful of other Jap Saturn games, realizing that I like this console way too much to simply not collect for it.
So I guess you could say I relapsed, but I'm ONLY gonna be collecting J Saturn games. It just has so much personality! I love classic 2D games it has. To me, they look the best and most pure on the Saturn. Everything about that console is great. Fighters, shmups, platformers, all the good classics I like are on it in some form, the quirky games are wonderful, the 3D games have this charm to them, and it even has a slew of legnthy games that tell a good story. You could say the Saturn gives me a gaming boner matched by no other. I also figured it would help me out with learning Japanese. I can be all like, "yeah, I learned this language by playing dating sims!" or what have you.
EDIT: Forgot to mention that I might be moving to Japan sometime in the next two years. My girlfriend and I want to teach English there.
Any advice from folks who have collected these before? Also, are there ways to import these games whilst not in Japan for more affordable prices than usual? Also, where should I look to find out about those niche Japanese Saturn titles that I just wont see anywhere else? There won't be a language barrier, as I am already well on my way to becoming at least somewhat fluent in Japanese.
Thanks for reading.
