I don't want my clearance anymore-- Would it be a mistake to take a private industry job and let it expire?

Post Body

I've become pretty disillusioned with government in my four years working in the industry with TS, for many of the obvious/common reasons. I have never felt like there is remotely enough work to do, no matter how much I ask for more work. I hate the slow pace and inefficiencies, as well as the effort of keeping up with the clearance.

Due to some of my personal beliefs I also feel a lot of moral ambiguity about the industry I contribute to (working for a defense contractor now). Politics aside, I don't want to be part of the war industry anymore.

Now, I'm still early in my career. I want to experience the 'outside' world and get a clean break from DoD/government work. This will likely include at least 20% pay cut and less job security. And of course, once I lose the clearance it will be hard to get it back. On the positive side, I would get to work remotely and feel less conflicted about my contribution to the world.

I know this is a very personal decision, but I want to ask the community here for two cents: Am I going to regret this?
