What is best form of self defense for walking the streets?

Got mugged last year and felt a bit awkward walking down the same streets since. Now the unrest is getting pretty bad I feel more anxious walking around especially if I want to have a smoke after 7 or 8pm.
I don't want to get a gun right now for a bunch of reasons so would like advice on other options. My main thought is the Saber Pepper Spray so if something happened I could spray and run? But interested in pros and cons and specific recommendations.
