can ships survive in the red sea?

Got into a naval battle with a Sloop today and the player fled to the red sea. They went into the sea (I tried to follow but had to retreat to repair), and then just sat there, sails up and anchored.

I couldn't see them bailing water, and I'm not sure if bailing is enough to keep a Sloop afloat out there anyway.

After about 15 mins, of being in the red sea the player went further in and off the map. I followed out of curiosity and was unable to reach the player before I got black screened and sent to an outpost.

Is there a trick to it?
