So do ships left by players not disappear?

So I see this ship at dagger tooth outpost as I was sailing by for a lost shipment voyage, decided to stop and see if maybe this was a new player and whatnot just to say hi. No one was in the ship, I used the spyglass and nothing would come up at all, I checked the entire island and there was no one there. Did this player maybe quit? Waited like 10-15mins still no one showed up and I left. Came back and a reaper crew decided to sink it.
