Fleeing a brig as a solo sloop

I remember actually having a chance to do this with decent success in the past, but lately it seems no matter how perfectly I sail in to the wind, the brig behind creeps closer and closer. It's like there is no escape. A guaranteed 3v1 and almost certain death. I've been playing this game for a loooong time. I'm not amazing at it, but I like to think I know what I'm doing at this point. This is starting to make the game unpleasant.
