TL;DR Is The Blacklist paid for by agencies and management companies ?
Been reading the Blacklist scripts for over 5 years now... I usually choose about 20-25 that have an interesting logline/premise/subject matter and read them throughout the year...One of my professors back in the day said the best cure for procrastination is reading other people's good/bad scripts, which seems to work for me.
Recently (2020 2021) I can’t help to feel like I'm wasting my time…some of these scripts/ writers seem genuinely mediocre/almost bad….nothing wrong with a basic horror premise about a demon in the woods killing teens but if that super basic premise made it to the list for great unproduced scripts of the year - there's gotta be something beyond that - amazing writing, fresh take, unique dialogue beyond:" oh my god, where is she?!" or the usual scary-situation-oops-was-actually-a-nightmare-jumpscare x 5
Trying to avoid my personal taste bias for a specific type of writing/genre by going for scripts outside of my usual go-to and I can definitely point out to many I didn't love, but did get why they would be there, going back to fresh take, unique voice, etc.
I know they have that line on it:" The Black List is not a “best of” list. It is, at best, a “most liked” list", but that's kinda dumb- is that what the most recognized place with screenwriters/screenplays should be? an exec fan club? also, you mean to tell me these execs aren't highly- motivated to vote for the scripts they/their colleagues are currently developing/producing?
This is a long ( and vent-y) way of asking- does anyone know of a truly great professional list/ monthly recommendation thing of great scripts I can read? Just tired of being disappointed. So many artistic systems we have in place today are based on the masses voting/paying for things, is there really none for screenplays?
