so i’ve always been a big defender of Scream 2, even going so far as to find a way to defend the cafeteria song scene with Derek. i’ve always loved it as a sequel and i think it gets too much criticism in recent years, even though i do agree it isn’t perfect. now, i wanted to finally give my shot at defending the final fight between Sidney and Mrs. Loomis in the theater.
so i think the main criticism i want to tackle overall is the thought that Sidney using the props and effects in the theater against Mrs. Loomis is a very weird choice and shouldn’t have been done. my defense is that not only should Sidney have done it, but it was all absolutely necessary. when Sidney starts the sound effects and shakes the thunder sheets, it creates enough sound to distract and distort Mrs. Loomis. later on, when she drops the prop stones on her, the amount of them falling on her at once and in such rapid succession is what causes her to fall. it doesn’t matter that they’re made of lighter material. that critique never made sense to me. even if they aren’t as heavy as real stones, they still have SOME weight to them.
honestly, that’s all i really have for my defense of this scene. it’s brief, but i think it’s always been a pretty simple explanation for why this fight DOES make sense, yet everyone just seems to think that because the finale was rewrote and rushed, it all doesn’t make sense. i don’t think that’s fair considering Wes was still meticulous about his details in these movies. i hope you guys are able to look at this scene with some more enjoyment instead of sitting through it thinking it shouldn’t work.
