If you work in a fast food place you will want to read this. At my last employment I received a call on the company’s phone during my shift from a “police officer” who was apparently undergoing an investigation about an employee who had been stealing from the establishment for 6 months. Now, we just had recently fired someone for stealing from the registers so it really sounded believable at the time. But I didn’t stop and think that the employee hadn’t even been there 6 months yet. Anyways, he told me that I needed to do a task that day or my manager would get in trouble. He said I needed to take money and bring it somewhere to prove something for manager and the police. He said I couldn’t talk to my other coworkers on shift while doing this task. So I go up to the front, he said I needed to get as long to $500 as possible because that’s apparently what the previous employee had stolen. We only had $340 in both registers combined. I take all the money out, and my coworkers didn’t question it because they saw me on the phone assuming I must’ve been on the phone with the manager. I don’t drive so I didn’t have anyway to go deposit this money like he wanted me to. He told me to get an Uber as apparently my company that I was working for would pay for it. So I got an Uber to a convenience store with the money in my pockets. He told me to buy some soft of gift card and load the money onto there. So I go and buy that gift card with the money. He then tells me to read off the numbers on that gift card, so I do. Mind you this whole time he told me that I was being monitored. Then he tells me to rip the gift cards up and flush them down the toilet, so I do that too. And then he said I needed to send him $50 of my personal money, and that is when I became sketchy. I told him I didn’t have $50 to send, and he said if I didn’t do that id be arrested. So I sent him $50 on PayPal. He told me to go back to my place of work and that my manager would be waiting for me there and that he’d call me back once I got there. I go back to the company, only to find my manager not there. I immediately panicked and realized that I had just got scammed and it also looks like I just stole company money. So I call the police first to report it and then I let my manager know what happened. Luckily, I did not get fired, but later we got a letter from the police saying that they basically couldn’t do anything about the scam and that it’s a “common scam” so I just wanted to warn y’all out there! The police will never contact you at any point in time for money.
