“[Insert Name HereLet’s have a bbq tomorrow!”- Anybody ever received this kind of text message?

Post Body

I got a text today from an unknown number who says that we should have a bbq tomorrow afternoon. They assume that I’m someone else and they even say who they are (ex. In this case, their name is Sophie, and I’m supposed to be Lucy). I jokingly say “Sure”, and ask what time, but I tell them I’m Lucy. The other person then realizes that I’m not Lucy, they apologize, and I accept it. They then say that I’m a nice person and ask if we can be friends. I again say sure. From here, the conversation seems okay. They say they’re from Munich, Germany, and that they run an import/export business based around selling Estée Lauder products. However, due to the war in Ukraine taking a toll on the European economy, they’re living in California now (they can’t speak English well, but can read and write it well). They ask me my name and location, and I just make up a bs name and I tell them I’m from Florida. We exchanged “selfies” with each other (I just took some stock image off of Google), and then they asked me if I have WhatsApp (they say that they use WhatsApp because they have it on their computer, and they used a private number to sign up for it (not the one they were were originally conversing on). I do, so we started chatting on it. They told me they live in LA now, and that they own an $8 million condo that they bought last year. I asked how is that possible, and they said they invest in beauty products, hospitals, and cryptocurrency (they make $100k/month from crypto). Now I was already suspicious that this was probably a scam from the very beginning, but as soon as they said cryptocurrency, this just confirmed my suspicions. From here, I just started to troll them by asking them can I get some more pics of them (they sent me a picture of girl), and asking them if they sell pictures of themselves on OnlyFans. They start becoming more hesitant throughout the conversation, and I then tell them that it seems very suspicious that I suddenly receive a text message inviting me to a bbq tomorrow, and then even after the mix up, they still wanted to be friends, chat on WhatsApp, and talk about cryptocurrency to me. They never responded back. I’ve had this happen like maybe 2-3 times now, but I don’t usually go this far with the conversations. But has anyone ever gotten these kinds of scam messages before?
