My wife had a "sponsored" page show up on her Facebook feed advertising raised garden beds for so cheap that it made her suspicious ("Corrugated Zinc Alloy Cedar Raised Garden Bed" selling for $19.99). She pointed out to me that just the material to make the bed would cost more than the price they were charging (wood is expensive these days). Right on the ad was the website, pre-holidaysale dot com. I asked her to block the Facebook account that posted the ad, turned on my proxy server, and visited the website.
The pages are all labeled with Lowe's logos, even the login page where they can steal your credentials. The WHOIS website says that the domain was created the Monday before last, August 14. I reported the website to Google and Microsoft and the domain registrar (for all the good that will do) and a nice looking website called ReportFraud dot ftc dot gov.
It's nice to be with someone who won't be entering login information on random scam websites, but I worry about the old retiree lady who wants to take advantage of a bargain and ends up losing her money. It would be great to have a TV spinoff of COPS called SCAMMERS BEHIND BARS that details the whole process from concerned citizen report to the final bang of the judge's gavel after sentencing.
