Help in memorizing melodies

All,
Picked up my horn again 14 years ago and play jazz standards, mostly, with play alongside, and stumble through solos.
But, try as I might, I just am unable to learn melodies. Any tips will be appreciated. I try to learn the words to the tune, and can learn them ok. I just cannot play the notes. There must be something fundamental that I can do to get out of this funk.
