Best places to learn music in SB and Goleta?

I have very little musical experience, but lately I've had an increasing desire to learn an instrument and maybe play in a band someday.
Where in the area would be a good place to explore music as an adult? I'm not exactly sure what instrument I want to pick up, so I need to experiment some. Is there a community in the area?
