Perhaps for television. In terms of the graphic novels it’s pretty normal. Even after Neil Gaimen finished the Sandman series, he came out with two extra books that were episodic standalone books, with not a lot of tie in to the original series.(DreamHunters I forgot what the other one was called.)
Not to mention all the spin-off series that started after the main series ended(Lucifer, Death, Books of Magic)
