There's been a lot of talk about getting young people to turn out to vote as well as making sure our voters are distributed to earn the most delegates. Both are incredibly important for sure. But one aspect of the caucus process that I feel has been neglected is the time we have to discuss and debate with Hillary supporters at the caucus to try and flip them to our side. If we come into caucus night prepared, I think we can sway a few Hillary supporters to our side. If we can manage to peel off even 5 or 10 percent of her supporters we could turn a nail-biter into a solid victory for Bernie.
Why would Hillary supporters switch sides?
I think it's safe to say without overgeneralizing that a lot of Hillary's supporters tend to skew towards older folks who get the vast majority of their information from cable television news. We know first hand how these news sources can misinform their viewers. The chances that some of Hillary's supporters who show up to caucus misinformed about Bernie is high. Even if they are a minority of her supporters, they are worth going after.
How can we better inform Hillary supporters about Bernie?
If we can create a FAQ or a list of common misconceptions that Hillary voters are likely to have about Bernie, and then bring that material with us on caucus night, we might be able to persuade people to join our side. If we create a "Bernie Brochure" we could put in:
- Details about Bernie's Medicare-for-all plan. Showcasing whose taxes will be raised, and by how much. In addition show how much money we save and compare our current healthcare costs with that of other countries who have already adopted universal healthcare.
- Details about Bernie's past and how he has been fighting for the middle class, LGBT and minorities for decades.
- Details about Bernie's legislative and voting history showcasing how he is able to "get things done" and has sound judgement.
- Attack the electability argument by showing how well he does in general election polls, but also show how he is preferred by independents and some republicans. Show that he already has the "center" which Hillary is trying to capture.
We should avoid attacking Hillary. This is a good rule in general but doubly important when talking to supporters who have already come out to caucus for her. If we come to the caucus with pro-Bernie material, dispel misconceptions, and argue for Bernie, I think we can convert some people.
Can we use this post to gather info-graphics and Photoshop talent to make a pro-Bernie FAQ for potentially misinformed Hillary supporters? Thoughts? Thanks.
