So I thought this subreddit could probably use a little help in not just aggregating news and highlights of Bernie, but in trying to find out simple and feasible ways that Bernie supporters could do. Because maybe you like Bernie Sanders but you haven't thought about how to be involved in a practical way without being one of those crazy Facebook political types. Anyway this is just some stuff I've been thinking about this afternoon and I thought it might help some other people.
ONE: Contact your local news stations. Especially if Bernie is coming through your town. Here is his upcoming event schedule from his website As of now there are only four events listed on his website (I say "only" as though it's not a year and a half 'til the election) Indianola, Iowa (today); Las Vegas, NV (6/19); Denver, CO (6/20); and Charleston, SC (6/21). Local news stations (radio and TV) listen to their viewers. Send them an email, tweet at them, facebook. Local news stations don't just have the broadcasts but they also have websites that they can do write ups on. This is a simple matter of exposure. The more people hear about Bernie Sanders name the better. A sample email off the top of my head might be:
"Dear Sir or Madam,
As you may be aware Presidential Candidate Bernie Sanders is making a campaign stop at [location] on [date]. I would be very interested to see [station's name] cover this event. Additionally I'd be interested in any past or future links from [station's website] that I could share with my family and friends.
Sincere thanks,
[your name]"
Maybe we could have a periodic update on campaign locations that we sticky to the subreddit? Just a thought.
TWO: Keep Up To Date With Volunteer Opportunities. This is Bernie's Volunteer Page from his website There's check boxes with specific jobs that you can tick off. They are:
Leaflet voters
Write letters to the editor
Knock on doors
Work in a campaign office
Table at events
Call voters
Place lawn signs
Data entry
Host a meeting
Host a fundraiser
Host a house party
Attend a house party
Help fundraise online
THREE Have Actual Conversations W/ Family & Friends About ISSUES. The three big things that Sanders lists on his own website are Income & Wealth Inequality, Getting Big Money Out of Politics, and Climate Change. Start with one of those three.
Why is Wealth Inequality Bad? From Wikipedia "Effects of inequality researchers have found include higher rates of health and social problems, and lower rates of social goods, a lower level of economic utility in society from resources devoted on high-end consumption, and even a lower level of economic growth when human capital is neglected for high-end consumption. For the top 21 industrialised countries, counting each person equally, life expectancy is lower in more unequal countries (r = -.907). A similar relationship exists among US states (r = -.620)."

Why Should We Get Big Money Out of Politics?
Most people understand the problem with this. But if you don't or want an easy way to explain it: People with more money to give to elections will favor their favorite candidates. Money is extremely important to campaigns because it means there are more ads and campaign stop and ultimately more exposure. These candidates are likely the ones that will keep the donors rich. And then that segues nice into why wealth inequality is bad.
Why is Climate Change Bad? Aside from the fact that it'll inevitably rocket Waterworld to be hailed as a prophetic and timeless classic of cinema (do you really want to do that to future movie buffs...do you?) there's
Increase of drought, fires and floods.
Rising Sea Levels
Stronger and more violent, damaging storms (like Hurricane Sandy).
Hotter temperatures that can cause increased death and illness.
Effects the ecosystem including many seafood industries not only killing say, New England lobster, but taking away those jobs.
Try and make these conversations as EDUCATIONAL as possible. Don't turn them into debates. Even if you don't mention Sanders' name these issues are still important. Politics is a long game, and these issues are big long-term issues that need to be discussed now. Having an educated populace is going to be crucial on reforms like these.
BONUS/FOUR I write all this as someone who lives in a hard Red State. No matter who I vote for the state's electoral college votes will go to the Republican. However I still think popular vote is important. (Hell, where's the grassroots organization to change the national election to a popular vote? Let's get Bernie in on this too.) It's important that we have conversations and increased exposure of the ideas we support. Again, politics is a long game. And it's important to realize that too. But I tend to think that Sanders Presidency would be best short and long-term. Politicians run on what can garner massive support and a lot of what Sanders stands for is exactly that. According to the Pew Research Center 54% of Americans favor taxing the wealthy to aid the poor (that article's a really good read overall if you're interested). This isn't the subreddit to be cynical about Bernie's chances. This a subreddit for aggregating links we can share and use as references, as well as the subreddit that organizes, volunteers and works for Sanders.
Last Words and Other Words These are some basic things we can all do. The videos and links are nice--and as I mentioned they can be great for sharing on social media and referencing a point or stance--but let's avoid an echo chamber where we all agree how great Bernie is. If you have additions, a better sample email, tips that have worked for you please share them as well as critiques or something I got wrong.
