Rental car-MBJ to Negril.

What are the thoughts about renting a car for a week stay in Negril? I have rented cars many times just to explore away from the resort, and going about when I please, etc. I have driven at many different places, ie, if you can drive the hectic place of Bali, Indonesia, then you can drive anywhere. Anyone's thought on this? Thanks.
