MOD POST: Catfish/Scammers: How to spot and avoid them
Author Summary

Post Body

Catfish, bots, and scammers are unfortunately an aspect of a Personals type sub like this. It's not an exaggeration to say we ban the same accounts DAILY. Sometimes the same people who've bought multiple accounts. Sometimes the same person in the same day. The spam filter catches a lot. But it isn't perfect, and things slip through the cracks. So, despite it possibly tipping some of these scammers off, I'll share some tips to help you spot them too, and stop giving them attention, nudes, or money

SUDDEN SHIFT IN POSTING TOPIC

Some of these accounts will post in "innocent" subs to build karma, before posting here. If you look at their post history, and they've been posting in r/cats, or r/anxiety memes, then suddenly go from there to posting the raunchiest personals post you've seen, they're a catfish

MULTIPLE POSTS IN A SMALL GEOGRAPHICAL AREA

Most guys on here don't get the same level of attention when they post, so I'll tip you off. If a lady posts on a sub like this, she can easily get over a hundred responses. THAT ALONE is a shitton to filter through. Now, multiply that by every SD sub you've heard of, and some you haven't. What should be a hookupnpoat is suddenly a part time job. NO REAL PERSON is doing that, unless they're going for quantity with the intent of scamming people

MULTIPLE POSTS IN A WIDE GEOGRAPHICAL AREA

Let's, once again, be for fucking real. No condescension meant, but which woman is going to post from LA, get in touch with YOU PERSONALLY, then totally drive down to San Diego to meet/play with you. Even working ladies will look for something closer to home. Let alone the ones who've simultaneously posted here and San Francisco. Take the sheer number of replies ladies get when they post, then add geographic distance to the logistics required to meet up. And you begin to understand how unrealistic those posts are

HIGH KARMA, BUT EMPTY POST HISTORY

The average redditor doesn't post rhen delete everything they post. If it's a throwaway account, they'll have low karma because it isn't used like their main. However, if their karma is high, bit completely empty, it's likely been bought ot hacked/stolen from a real person with the intent to scam others

THAT PEGGING "LADY" ISN'T FUCKING REAL

Most of you have caught on already. But in case you haven't, the "Latina wanting to peg you" is an especially malicious brand of scammer. We catch them the two to four times a day they try to post. But help us out and downvote/report their posts as well.

Help us help YOU. And don't take these fucking scammers at their word and start handing over personal information, compromising pictures, or money.

REAL WOMEN DO POST ON THE SUB. Please don't take this post as justification to harass or accuse any woman who posts on here of being a catfish. Loser behavior, and behavior that will get you banned. However, do a bit of due diligence and work to ensure you're talking to someone legit on the other end, before taking their word for it and getting frustrated at best, and exploited at worst
