How many of you gave up on moving to Florida because of the home insurance crisis and increase in cost of living? Where are you headed to now?

Post Body

We're in southern California. We really wanted to move to Florida because of the ocean, the greenery and lower cost of living (Orlando because it's not so close to the coast when the natural disasters happen but you can still drive there on weekends), however, the home insurance crisis is scaring us away - plus the reports of how fast cost of living is ramping up. We make a bit more than 150K combined and I can work remotely for the same company - wife makes 50K here so she would probably get paid less in Florida, but I still think it would be manageable. We're both 29. Since we don't like snow and want to be able to afford a fairly big but still cheap house (300K ish), I'm thinking we may end up moving to San Antonio, TX, as much as we like Florida. We travel a lot and have been to Miami, Orlando, Fort Lauderdale etc - we loved those cities, especially Orlando, despite the drastic change it would be for us when it comes to weather.
