Hey everyone, I’m 28 (M) and currently living in Buffalo, NY. I do enjoy it here and don’t mind the harsh winters. I just had my final interview for a job in Salt Lake City that would double my income, which is huge for me right now. My goal is to lock in for a year or two, get out of credit card debt, stack some savings for a house, and build a better foundation for my future.
That said… I’m trying to figure out if I’ll be miserable living in SLC. I’ve read mixed things online where some say people can be super judgmental, the LDS influence is hard to avoid if you’re not religious, and you basically have to be super outdoorsy to not feel out of place. I’m not here to bash anyone’s beliefs or lifestyle but I’m just not sure how someone like me will fit in day-to-day.
A bit about me: • I’m single, tattooed (arm, body, etc), and really into weightlifting. • I like to go out occasionally, grab drinks, and meet people. Im a huge Buffalo Bills fan and love watching sports, UFC, etc. I’m extremely social with a soft introduction, but it’s hard for me to build up the courage to approach people randomly. That said, once I do connect, I’m one of the most outgoing, funny, and easygoing people you’ll meet. • I’m not super outdoorsy right now, but I’ve got a Tacoma and I’m hoping to upgrade it for overlanding and truck bed camping. I’d love to explore the national parks while I’m out there. I really want to be more outdoorsy and this would be a great opportunity. • I enjoy casual dating and I’m open to relationships, but I’m not looking for a super traditional lifestyle. • Politically, I’d call myself pretty centrist, maybe center-right on some things, left on others. Socially, I’m pretty open-minded and just want to be around chill, reasonable people. • I enjoy metalcore, country, and heavy metal, I do like going to shows. Will I find concerts and venues out there I’ll enjoy?
Here’s what I’m trying to figure out: • Is it hard to make new friends in SLC if you’re not part of the church or already plugged into a scene? • Are there neighborhoods that feel more alternative/progressive/laid-back? • Is there a real counterculture here of people who live outside the mainstream, aren’t religious, and still love living here? • What’s the dating scene like for someone in their late 20s (straight) who’s into casual stuff but also open to something more? • Will I feel judged or isolated based on my lifestyle, politics, or appearance? • Is there a solid live music scene, especially for heavier genres? • And finally — is this a good place to grind for a year or two, build, grow, and not feel like I’m stuck somewhere I don’t belong?
Any insight from people who’ve relocated here or are living a little off the “expected path” would be super appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Sounds like you’ll fit in great! SLC has many breweries, and cook things to do. Many east coast folks live here! Maybe look for a place downtown to start out in, then get the lay of the land to know where you want to go.
