Now, maybe the city should hire someone to audit the tours for accuracy of information.
It's laughable the kind of crazy crap I've overheard some of these 'tour guides' tell people. And forget if someone asks a question slightly off script from what the guide seems to have spent 5 minutes googling about Salem and its history. Those answers are clearly made up on the spot.
That's interesting, I didn't know that. Yeah, maybe it needs to be beefed up, ha.
Yeah, where am I suggesting legislating tours?
I love how people really don't understand the meaning of the First Amendment. Or, they don't understand that having 'freedom of speech' doesn't mean they aren't also subject to consequences for what they say.
There's a few of those people in this thread actually.
I never suggested legislation, that's a projection entirely on your part.

If a tour is presenting itself as 'historic', there absolutely should be a level of accountability with the information being shared.
Salem has done a lot to reconcile 'stories' and 'agreed upon facts'.
There are laws in place in Salem dictating what home owners of homes deemed 'historic' can and can't do with their property. Any jabroni with a strap-on mic and amp shouldn't be allowed to present themself as a historic tour if they aren't informed.
There's plenty of highly educated folks who have spent their lives working with the history of Salem, with no alterior motives. Just because they don't have a time machine to go back and verify it, doesn't mean there isn't a baseline of currently accepted facts. And it is always open to changes from new information. That's how history works.
