Hey reddit, I'm currently down in cancun sailing south with a captain who isn't as experienced as he lead on. His knots are wrong, he doesn't know how to properly trim his sails, refuses to use motor when the wind dies in a busy channel, etc...incorrectly wired some electrical stuff that I ended up fixing. Doesn't use any instruments such as radar or autopilot. I'm only a tiny bit experienced with my 103, and day sails under my belt but seeing these things has me second guessing myself. We are supposed to sail down to Panama then to San Diego, but at this rate I'm doubting he will make it there. At what point should I simply leave or is it a good idea to continue on?
Edit: Thank you so much for the replies everyone, I was exhausted and had to get some sleep after I posted. To clear up some questions. It is his boat, I came to assist as a crew member in a delivery to gain some more offshore experience. Not being paid or paying him. I ended up leaving the boat, it seemed like too big of a safety risk, and everything he had touched kept breaking. He wouldn't reason with anything I had go say, would simply argue with me and say its insulting and he knows what he is talking about. He has never used any instruments, I got a few of them working but everything was outdated and kept having to be reset or simply wouldn't turn on. It's a long long way to Panama then to San diego and I simply decided last night that its not safe for me go continue aboard his vessel. Thank you for the replies and confidence
