Except for the most part the Japanese & Korean stuff was only cheap by price - the value was there. Ya, a Sony TV was "cheap" - but as good, or better, of a TV than you could buy American made.

Chinese goods simply don't have that reputation. Whereas Japan took existing tech and improved upon it (and often sold it at a loss, because they could), Chinese goods just try to cut as many corners to build it as truly cheap as possible.

Sure, the things made in China that have someone else watching over their proverbial shoulders might be of decent quality - the issue is the 999 knockoff lookalikes that spring up because, China.
