With a shoestring budget, the Imperial Japanese Navy is required to make do with what it has, and that include some other, experimental technologies with potential to be an equalizer to the lack of modern capital ships of the IJN. Inspired by the planned raids on the High Seas Fleet using the Sopwith Cuckoos, the IJN have scheduled for a mock practice for demonstration of the potential of naval aviation. For the first trial, 6 Sopwith Cuckoos launched from IJN Shoho for a dummy torpedo attack run, as well as 30 MF.11 launched from the Koyate and Mitaka on a dummy bomb attack run, with the target being a 15 knots pre-dreadnought battleline. The targets are to be Tango, Suwo, Mishima, Okinoshima and Aso. Afterwards, there would be a live warhead test using the same 6 Cuckoos on the Mishima, moored next to a pier, with the seaplane formation attacking with bombs. The entire test will be conducted in extreme secrecy.
During the test, all Cuckoos took off successfully [11/20], choosing the Tango, Suwo and Aso as their targets. The first Cuckoo attacking the Tango released it's torpedo wildly off course. The second one managed to be on target had the Tango not maneuvered out of its course, even for a meager 15 knots. The first Cuckoo attacking the Suwo with the torpedo scoring a direct hit on the Suwo, suddenly exploding in front of a bewildered crew as the torpedo equipped was a fully armed one, not a dummy. The torpedo penetrated the bulkhead and water started to rush into the ship. The second torpedo also struck the ship at the same time, despite being a dummy, managed to jam its rudder. The last 2 bombers attacking the Aso managed to score 1 (simulated, fortunately) hit. The Suwo is saved, being ran aground by its crew before being evacuated with minimal losses [17/20]. Unfortunately for the rest of the test targets, now the seaplanes start approaching. Lets hope nobody equipped them with live warheads this time. The seaplanes go for the 2 unattacked ships, Mishima and Okinoshima. 30 seaplanes converged on the Mishima and Okinoshima. First wave of 8 attacks the Mishima, with 12 going for the Okinoshima. With the seaplanes diving before an attack to improve accuracy, 1 bomb managed to strike the Mishima's upper citadel, cracking the glass, with one striking the stern. The rest missed with a varying degree of accuracy, although one did knock out its fore mast. The Okinoshima got 2 hits registered, and also suffered 1 hit with actual damage, somehow, as a near miss went under water into its propellers, disabling it. Second wave of 6 attacks the Mishima, with 4 attacking the Okinoshima. The unlucky Okinoshima manages to ride out the next attack with no damage or hits, although one bomb did ricochet off of its deck. The Mishima however suffered 1 hit to its funnel, somewwhat disfiguring it and one hit to its front, striking the bow before ricocheting back into the sea. Although the Mishima was originally going to be the target of a string of live torpedoes, the Okinoshima having suffered actual damage was chosen to be the target instead. The Suwo, after having its crew evacuated, after being deemed to damaged to be worth repairing, is also going to be treated by a wave of 30 seaplanes carrying live bombs. 2 torpedoes managed to strike the Okinoshima, although 1 turned out to be a dud, the other exploded, tearing the ship in half, with the Okinoshima going under in just 20 minutes. Finally, after being plastered by a total of 10 sorties and approximately 40 tons worth of bombs, with a miraculous hit rate of 30%, the Suwo is nothing left but a smoldering wreck.
The test was a stunning success, despite the loss of life and ship. At a loss of a single coastal defense battleship and an old former Russian gunnery training pre-dreadnought, the Navy General Staff was shown the potential of naval aviation. One might be left to wonder what would have happened if the Royal Navy had used the same Cuckoos against the High Seas Fleet.
The Suwo and Okinoshima was struck out of the navy registry and officially designated as heading to the scrapyard to conceal the secret. However, the Naval Attaches of the Great Powers in Japan did notice, and it was not long until it became known to them that the IJN conducted aircraft carrier strike test, inflicting some kind of damage on their pre-dreadnought and CBS, and at least enough for them to be struck off of the navy registry.
