These were the word that echoed across the city of Munich, broken only by the intermittent roar of gunshots and the mechanical whirring of trucks carrying thousands of soldiers wearing the white and blue of the new "Republic of Bavaria" into the city. Initial resistance from the Communist militiamen had been fearsome but short-lived, as their revolutionary fervor could only hold our for so long against the overwhelming forces of the Freikorp-bolstered Bavarian government.
Within the city, panic began to spread quickly among the Communist officials that had delcared themselves as the leaders of the city. The citizens of Munich, tired of war that had engulfed their country for almost half a decade, had little patience for a group looking to prolong the violence for ideals that many of them did not care for. Without public support, and being vastly outnumbered by troops with better training and equipment, any Communist not willing to fight to the death found themselves abandoning their post and going into hiding throughout the city. Within hours, the fighting was over, most of the militia lying dead or dying throughout the streets.
Initially, people began to report the Communists and Communist sympathizers hiding throughout the city to the Bavarian soldiers stationed seemingly on every street corner. They were told that these radicals would be rounded up and thrown in prison for treasonous acts against the new Bavarian government. Quickly, however, the bodies of these men and women began popping up throughout the city. Alleys began to reek with the metallic tang of blood, and the stench of death and rot began to spread from houses that had been abandoned for years across Munich. No one spoke of the silent massacres that continued for the next two weeks, but all knew what was happening, and eventually reports of "radicals" slowed to a trickle, before stopping completely. But whether this was due to a completion of the cruel task undertaken by the troops, or an unwillingness of the people of Munich to support it any longer, was yet to be seen.
Within a month, confident in their complete and total victory over the Communist threat, the Bavarian army troops withdrew, leaving a tired and muted Munich to clean up the mess they had left. The people of the city were a hardy bunch, and did not dare complain as they took on their new, nauseating task of burying the dead who still had friends and family among the living, and disposing of those who had no one left to cry for them. Munich had been secured for the new Bavarian government, but its people felt anything but secure. For if the Freikorp-integrated Bavarian army was willing to go to such extreme lengths as they had seen over the last month over a ragtag group of Communist sympathizers, then what lengths would they not stoop to if any dared to further oppose them?
